About Hygger - Nanuk (Polar Bear)

Problem – Getting a good night’s sleep in a sleeping bag without feeling uncomfortable

Solution – Hygger human shaped sleeping bags with arms and legs

In recent years quite a few variations of sleeping bags have emerged. There are generally two main categories. Square (also referred to as rectangular/blanket) and the Mummy Shaped sleeping bag. The traditional mummy shaped bag has been joined by many variations to enable every person to choose the perfect style matching his preferred sleeping habit. Every variation has its advantages and disadvantages. There are:

  • Sleeping bags with arms and legs
  • Expandable mummy shaped bags
  • Barrel shaped or Egg shaped sleeping pods
  • Bags with arms and sleeves attached to an otherwise mummy shaped bag
  • Mummy shaped bags which allow you to push your arms out but have no sleeves
  • And probably more…

Choose what suits your needs best. Humans sleep in whatever position makes us feel the most comfortable at the time.

Hygger sleeping bags with arms and legs are ideal for you if you:

  • have the favored sleeping positions of laying on the side or stomach (76% of population)
  • feel restrained in your traditional sleeping bag during rest
  • are an active sleeper that values freedom to move
  • enjoy lounging where you are without getting cold

The sleeping bag with arms and legs was invented in 1936

In 1936 Ajungilak (today Mammut) launched the world’s first sleeping bag with arms and legs and called it Gubbe. “Ajungilak” is said to be Inuit for “warm greeting” or “comfort. Gubbe wasn’t a big success though. And this for the same reasons any other sleeping bag with arms and legs since then has failed to be successful. While the sleeping bag with arms and legs was a good idea as a concept it was never designed warm enough in relation to its pack volume and weight. It was usually way too heavy and big compared to the temperature it was able to generate. Think of finger gloves and mittens. Only with the most advanced materials a finger glove works properly. And still mountaineers climbing the highest peaks use mittens.

At Hygger we are Experts in human shaped sleeping bags

In the past 10 years the team at Hygger has gathered extensive experience in the niche segment of sleeping bags with arms and legs. The brand Hygger is derived from the Nordic word “Hygge”. Hygge (/ˈhjuːɡə/ HEW-gə or /ˈhuːɡə/ HOO-gə) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. Hygger Nanuk follows the tradition of the original sleeping bag with arms and legs (Ajungilak Gubbe from 1936) and names its bag in Inuit. Nanuk means Polar Bear.

Hygger Nanuk is the first human shaped sleeping bag that comes in a healthy relation of weight, pack size, temperature rating and of course price. With the Nanuk you can have arms and legs on your sleeping bag and sleep free without carrying a mountain of material with you.

Hygger is a proud supporter of Polar Bears International.
